About the Mount Washington Observatory

Since 1932, the non-profit Mount Washington Observatory has monitored the incredible weather extremes atop the tallest peak in the northeastern United States. The mountain’s freezing fog, heavy snow, bitter cold and relentless wind provide for a one-of-a-kind platform for scientific research and education.

Through its two interactive museums and engaging outreach programs, the Observatory brings the complexity of the atmosphere right to eager learners’ fingertips, sparking an interest in science and an understanding of the world around us. The Observatory receives support from its 4,000 members, corporate partners, research projects, educational programs and unique projects like the Washburn Gallery. The sustaining effort allows the Observatory to continually add to its 70+ year unbroken climate record, an endeavor that grows in importance as the issue of climate change continues to expand in awareness.
